An update on mixed Ultimate: 9/12/2011
AUC,
Thought that an update is in order since this is the time of year that your beloved league mates often go abroad to compete against the world! Actually we just played in Greenville, NC, but no joking when I say that that place seems like another country (both in distance from home and in lacking similarity).
Anyway, the important thing is that a mixed team comprised primarily of Ashevillians, and quite a few recruits from out of town, won the Section this past weekend. Only 7 mixed teams are in our section, and the top 3 earn bids to regionals.
Saturday we faced the 7 seed (15-3 good guys), the 6 seed (again 15-3 good guys). After two easy games to start the day we faced our most formidable opponent on the weekend, the #1 seeded Wagon Wheel. We started the game with 2 breaks and never looked back. However, it was a close game throughout, and Wagon Wheel is a very solid and deep team with nearly 4 full lines of players. The cap went on at half, as the rounds were very short for 15 point games (only an hour and 15 minutes). This came to our benefit as after have we were up a break and receiving the disc. We traded points in the cap to win the game 10-8. We had our bye round after that game, and came back to lackadaisically defeat Shake N Bake of Wilmington, NC 14-8.
Sunday morning we saw the last two games of pool play come and go quickly as we won the 1st game of the day against the 5 seed 15-2 and the 2nd game against the 4 seed and 3rd place regionals qualifier One Hit Wonders 15-6. This brought on a rematch against Wagon Wheel to decide the sectionals championship and 2nd place seed out of our section for regionals. I know that there is a Wagon Wheeler or two that subscribes to this list, so I'll be modest when I say that we took it to them. Once up 7-3, our offense made a few quick mistakes and gave up a wake up call that at any time a team is capable of mounting a come back, and we squeaked by, taking half 8-6 on a point that we turned it over giving Wagon Wheel had an end zone line possession to tie the game. After half we came out rejuvenated and refocused and never looked back, as we scored the 1st point out of half and never let the Wheelers get within more than two as we rode out the cap to an 11-8
victory.
Cahoots!
